Do AI translation tools (e.g., DeepL,- ChatGPT) help or hinder language acquisition?
AI is widely used in the digital age, and it has become a helpful tool for learning a new language. In the past, people had to rely on classes and textbooks to study a new language. But now, with the help of the internet and AI, learning has become easier and more accessible. Users can learn at any time and in any place. Because of these changes, AI has become an important resource. It can provide immediate comprehension support, improve vocabulary and grammar, and assist with the learning process.
To begin with, one major benefit of AI for language learners is its efficiency. AI has the ability to provide immediate responses, and effective support for vocabulary and grammar learning. Beginners can quickly understand what another language means when they use AI tools. AI can translate right away and help learners study more efficiently, so they can focus on learning instead of stressing about finding the right answer. Another key benefit of AI, in addition to immediate translation, is instant feedback. As noted by Campbell (2023), “instead of waiting for teachers to check their work, learners can get immediate corrections and suggestions from AI tools.” The efficiency of AI helps learners to learn new vocabulary and improve grammar. It gives clearer examples and shows more natural ways to use the language. For example, Grammarly— an AI-powered writing assistant software tool, helps users to check and correct grammar errors and offers writing suggestions. By using Grammarly, learners can advance their language skills and improve their writing at the same time. AI is fast and efficient; not only can it give us immediate responses, but it also provides unlimited vocabulary and grammar resources.
In addition to the efficiency of AI, people use AI as a learning tool because it can adjust to their personal needs. AI caters to each individual; it helps learners detect their weaknesses and suggest what they need to improve. It feels almost like having a personal assistant that understands how you learn best. For example, AI tools can recommend targeted exercises, assist learners to review previously learned material. Furthermore, AI can generate practice questions or tests, such as multiple-choice quizzes, to strengthen memory. This makes learning new knowledge and reviewing easier because learners get the right level of practice at the right time. According to Fitria (2021), AI technology significantly enhances the quality of learning by making the overall learning process more practical, efficient, and effective. Through personalized learning support, AI enables learners to develop more effective study habits and stay more engaged in their learning.
Despite these benefits, some might argue that AI will harm language learning because users might become too dependent on it. They might rely only on translation tools instead of trying to understand the language on their own. This could make it harder for them to learn naturally. However, this problem usually occurs only when AI is overused or used improperly. The important thing is to learn how to use it correctly, not to avoid it. When learners use AI as a supportive tool rather than relying on it completely, it can enhance learning by helping them check their understanding, monitor their learning progress, and receive guidance when they encounter difficulties. It is all about balance; use it as a study tool not as a replacement for critical thinking.
In conclusion, AI tools can help language learners study more efficiently in all aspects. In addition, AI offers personalized learning experiences and instant feedback, which makes the entire learning process smoother and more effective. Although some doubt that AI would lead to overdependence on technology, this issue typically arises only when learners use these tools incorrectly. When learners use it wisely, AI would be a valuable study tool rather than a barrier. As the saying goes “ Learn smarter, not harder.” By combining AI with practice and critical thinking, language learners can benefit significantly from it and make the process of learning a new language efficient and more successful.
